Modern W-4 (2020+)
The current W-4 uses filing status, multiple jobs checkbox, dependents credit, other income, deductions, and extra withholding. Allowances were replaced in 2020.
Legacy W-4
If you still use a pre-2020 W-4 with allowances, each allowance reduces taxable income by about $4,700 annually. Toggle legacy mode in our calculator if needed.
Adjusting withholding
Too much refund? Reduce extra withholding. Owing at tax time? Add extra withholding on Step 4(c) or update dependents and deductions.
